Summary

FROM THE WINNERS OF THE 2019 NOBEL PRIZE IN ECONOMICS

'Refreshingly original, wonderfully insightful 。 。 。 an entirely new perspective' Guardian

Why would a man in Morocco who doesn't have enough to eat buy a television?
Why do the poorest people in India spend 7 percent of their food budget on sugar?
Does having lots of children actually make you poorer?

This eye-opening book overturns the myths about what it is like to live on very little, revealing the unexpected decisions that millions of people make every day。 Looking at some of the most paradoxical aspects of life below the poverty line - why the poor need to borrow in order to save, why incentives that seem effective to us may not be for them, and why, despite being more risk-taking than high financiers, they start businesses but rarely grow them - Banerjee and Duflo offer a new understanding of the surprising way the world really works。

Winner of the FT Goldman Sachs Business Book of the Year Award 2011

A thorough investigation into the lives of those who are earning less than $1/day but presented in a simple, and straightforward way。 Highly recommended to those who wanted to make sense of why certain things are the way they are。There are few bits aren’t surprising, but still amazing works done by both authors。

Incredible, I would give it 6 stars if I could。 A must read about economics of the poor, how they manage money, their access to basic services, their views on investment and risk。。。

Sanyog

One of the finest books describing the economics related to poverty。 Truly an eyeopener on poverty and the solutions prescribed for。

Tricia

A nuanced take on poverty traps and effective ways to help men and women escape them worldwide that acknowledges personal, cultural, and systemic issues that must be addressed for long lasting change to take place。

The book doesn't pretend to have all the answers。 But it leaves the readers with some probing questions。 。。。more

A great read about poverty。 Every policymaker or NGO that aims to fight poverty must read this book。 The book is an easy read and offers the reader a new perspective on poverty。Three main reasons why I love this book:1。 It is an evidence-based book that presents research on poverty concisely and beautifully。2。 It explains the poverty trap and why the poor remain poor。 The book discusses how poor people make everyday decisions, and why they make those decisions。3。 Illustrates organization and pol A great read about poverty。 Every policymaker or NGO that aims to fight poverty must read this book。 The book is an easy read and offers the reader a new perspective on poverty。Three main reasons why I love this book:1。 It is an evidence-based book that presents research on poverty concisely and beautifully。2。 It explains the poverty trap and why the poor remain poor。 The book discusses how poor people make everyday decisions, and why they make those decisions。3。 Illustrates organization and policy-driven solutions to solve different facets of poverty。PS。 I like that this book has a subtle remark on feminism, and that empowering woman helps solve poverty。PPS1。 Favorite chapter is the chapter on Health。PPS2。 I like that the graphs are very intuitive, but as an academic and researcher myself, it wouldn't hurt if it was a little bit more quantitative (i。e。, number on the x- and y-axis) 。。。more

Very unique insights in this book about life in poverty, really well researched and easy to understand。 I do wish it also talked about what pushes people into poverty; I’ve always been curious about the origins of poverty。 My favorite parts included their research about reservations for women in village governments and a discussion of the limits and benefits of micro credit。 Also, I’m slightly confused about the possibility of such solutions and careful study being undertaken in capitalist socie Very unique insights in this book about life in poverty, really well researched and easy to understand。 I do wish it also talked about what pushes people into poverty; I’ve always been curious about the origins of poverty。 My favorite parts included their research about reservations for women in village governments and a discussion of the limits and benefits of micro credit。 Also, I’m slightly confused about the possibility of such solutions and careful study being undertaken in capitalist societies。 Is our economic policy faulty or too absolute, or is it suitable to support such a vision for eliminating poverty? Final note: very helpful for anyone who wants to work in the NGO/development studies/human rights field to know what type of work should you support and what you shouldn’t! Love the fact that a lot of their examples come from my state, Rajasthan。 。。。more

So this book is ten years old。 I was prepared for outdated advice, especially when I saw that the book included a section on microfinance。 But imagine my surprise when the section turned out to be very sceptical on the possibility of microloans doing much good。 These days criticism towards microloans is mainstream, but ten years ago that was vanguard thinking。 On other fronts this book fares equally well: I couldn't find any claim or proposal that was outdated or debunked。 This is extremely well So this book is ten years old。 I was prepared for outdated advice, especially when I saw that the book included a section on microfinance。 But imagine my surprise when the section turned out to be very sceptical on the possibility of microloans doing much good。 These days criticism towards microloans is mainstream, but ten years ago that was vanguard thinking。 On other fronts this book fares equally well: I couldn't find any claim or proposal that was outdated or debunked。 This is extremely well done for a decade-old book on a highly politicized subject! And the book is also well-written, filled with data but also anecdotes to illustrate that data。 The marching order is very clear: the authors show their dislike towards pundits who use anecdotes in stead of data, and they keep actual research front and center。I was familiar with some of the research already, so there weren't any big surprises, but lots of small revelations。 Banerjee and Duflo help the reader understand the difficulties that cause the world's poor to stay poor。 They do not blame the poor for their situations, but they don't treat them as powerless victims, either。 It's an attitude I'd like to see in every book dealing with global poverty。Highly recommended to effective altruists and other people interested in global economics。 。。。more

You are shown how immigration is not a cause of job loss, in fact the more diverse your country is the more resilient it will be to economic change。You are given an overhead view of important problems facing governments today on both a macro and micro scale。If your interested in equality and economics I would recommend this book to you。

Could not imagine a better intro to the work that has been done in the field of RCTs and development economics。 Lot's of ideas to process, but definitely worth it。 Debunks some common myths about poverty, and makes one understand some seeming odd behaviour from the perspective of the Westerners。 Could not imagine a better intro to the work that has been done in the field of RCTs and development economics。 Lot's of ideas to process, but definitely worth it。 Debunks some common myths about poverty, and makes one understand some seeming odd behaviour from the perspective of the Westerners。 。。。more

Poor Economics is a Nobel-prize winning book that discusses the mentality and the behaviour of the poorest people in the world (those that live under $99 a day)。 Besides, the book goes through the biggest challenges of the countries in which the extremely-poor live。 This book is not politic since it doesn’t aim for the right policies to be implemented in the emerging economies。 The book develops a landscape on which are the main problems to tackle and which solutions tried to solve and failed。 I Poor Economics is a Nobel-prize winning book that discusses the mentality and the behaviour of the poorest people in the world (those that live under $99 a day)。 Besides, the book goes through the biggest challenges of the countries in which the extremely-poor live。 This book is not politic since it doesn’t aim for the right policies to be implemented in the emerging economies。 The book develops a landscape on which are the main problems to tackle and which solutions tried to solve and failed。 Institutions have a relevant role in the economic growth of these countries, however, corruption doesn't seem to be the main responsible for the lack of grow。 The problem of these countries comes mainly from the demand and not from a lack of supply。The extremely-poor people lack education, financial literacy and have mistaken beliefs about the impact of their actions。 An example, poor people privilege short-term over long-term。 Even if they explain to the poor that a small effort today has a better benefit in the future, they still prefer to benefit in the present。 Another example is that poor when faced with a decrease in the consumer-good prices, prefer to buy more variety rather than usufruct to eat more from that specific product。 This discussion goes on and on throughout the book。An excellent book (if it wasn’t an excellent book, it couldn’t have won the Nobel-prize) mainly to perceive how the poor behave in their daily lives, which are their top priorities, and how should the world and local governments look to solve these problems。 。。。more

The main reason this book did not get a 5-star is because it lacked a solid structure。 The content was amazing, but I would like to have seen more clear themes。 It sometimes felt like a stream of consciousness with a healthy dose of research mixed in。 Besides this lack of clear narrative, the book was amazing, and I would definitely recommend it。
